Michael Reed’s invaluable study shines new light on Mormons’ complex and ambiguous relationship with the cross. Reed’s research, the most exhaustive ever undertaken on this subject, should help other Christians understand the historic, cultural and religious context out of which Latter-day Saint attitudes toward the cross emerged—and it should help Latter-day Saints find greater spiritual meaning in this most poignant and profound of Christian symbols.

Why the cross is not used as a visual symbol by the Mormon Church is a frequently raised question. This book is an in-depth look at the history of the cross as a symbol for both Protestants and Mormons in the 19th century. It explains how the current Mormon practice developed while making it clear that there is nothing in Mormon scripture or doctrine that compels Mormons to reject the cross as a symbol. It is reader-friendly and very informative.Product details

Banishing the Cross The Emergence of a Mormon Taboo Michael G Reed 9781934901359 Books Reviews
Having taken the time to respond to what I consider to be a VERY poorly conceived 2 star "review" of this wonderful book, I feel compelled to put essentially the same message I related in that response as a separate review of my own in order to off-set her undeserved 2 star rating.
First, I became aware of this work about four years ago when I read an article about it in a local Salt Lake City paper. Such a fascinating topic! Not knowing anything about Mr. Reed, I contacted him to ask when the book would be finished and arranged to have him autograph a copy for me. I had no idea we would wait for nearly three more years to see his research and effort finally published, but when it was, and I had my treasured signed copy in-hand, I couldn't put it down. Contrary to the mis-informed reviewer who posted that 2 star review, I don't think he missed the 'point' at all. IF she had even read this book, she would have known that it is FULL of referrences to the fact that Mr. Reed is well aware that the cross is much more than just a symbol, a fact that makes HER 'point' pointless. The very quote she used to try to strengthen her 'point' (1 Corinthians 118) is IN Mr. Reed's book, not only as a quote, but with an explanation from him regarding it. I'm not sure whether she just missed that, or didn't even read the book! He also CLEARLY states in his introduction that his book would "primarily focus on attitudes toward 'material or visual symbols'" of the cross. Did she miss that also?
My take is that Mr. Reed's intent with this book was to explore the history of the use and then lack of use of the cross within Mormonism. He wasn't attempting to discuss ALL the many uses or values or meanings or messages of the cross throughout christendom. In no conceivable way does his book "lack substance" or is "superficial". It is exactly what it purports to be - a well-documented and well-researched treatise on the emergence of the cross as a taboo within Mormonism. Anyone reading it for the purpose it was written will find fascinating facts, photos and history that is hard to find anywhere else. It stands on its own as a one-of-a-kind work on the little understood and rarely discussed history of the use of the 'symbol' of the cross within the LDS faith and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the subject or who wants to learn why the current LDS church has such an aversion to the use of the cross.
This book clears up the traditional misconception that Mormons have never used the cross. It is filled with photos of Brigham Young's wives and daughters wearing crosses, Mormon Chapels with Cross decorations, and even the original "This is the Place" Monument photo as a cross. Reed details the history that led to many Mormons' current attitude toward the cross. Very thorough, scholarly work.
In Banishing the Cross (2012), Mike Reed explores the rejection of the crucifix, and eventually, the cross, as Papist glorifications of Jesus' death.
The early Mormons were involved in Masonry and folk-magic, where they frequently saw various permutations of the cross they therefore did not reject the symbol. With increased Catholic competition, around 1900 and around 1950, Mormons reacted by becoming almost phobic about the cross, as a symbol of Jesus' Sacrifice and Resurrection. They do not understand it-- partially because of the analogy they draw between Jesus and Joseph Smith. Although Reed does not cover the Catholic theology of the cross, any Catholic who knows their faith can fill this in.
Even today representations of the crucifix are never seen in the low churches. They reject it as Papist. Even the cross is not frequently seen. These churches and the Mormons all have difficulty with the problem of pain.
An excellent book, well researched, which filled in blank spaces in my own research.
Excellent history that is not talked about in the Mormon church. And for all the Protestants out there, looks like your church has not been talking about it's history with the cross either.
For those who might have wondered why Mormons tend to eschew the cross within their practice of Christianity...this book will definitely answer this curiosity. Michael provides excellent research and background on the various evolving issues that have shaped the attitutes of the LDS faithful on this iconic symbol. I would highly recommend this for anyone looking to expand their knowledge of Mormon history.
I highly recommend this book to anyone, member or nonmember, who has questions as to why Mormons don't usually wear crosses or have them in their homes. I am LDS (Mormon) and this answered my questions. I will now feel more comfortable wearing a cross and seeing other wearing them in the LDS community.
I went into reading this book thinking it may be another anti-Mormon book, however, it was far from that. Michael Reed presented information about the history of the cross in relation to the Mormon church presenting, as Joe Friday would put it, "Just the facts..." It was enlightening and it showed where the aversion to the cross in some members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints comes from. Mr. Reed also presented the points of view of splinters from the original Mormon Church, which I find quite interesting. I would highly recommend reading this book to learn more about things not really discussed in LDS Church history.
